Sunflowers!

Mark and I were having a side discussion, and sunflower seeds would make an excellent addition to our project. Anyone up for building a sunflower seed huller and oil press? Here's the link:

  1. I was planning on growing some sunflowers.
The press, well, I'll leave that to someone else.

  2. Maybe Mark can build one from scrap. I know he's building a lathe from parts he made from a foundry he made. Sharon could have a whole sea of sunflowers in her back yard.

BTW, can any type of olive tree survive in our climate?

  3. Yes there are olive trees that will survive in our area. I don't think that olives will bear fruit for several years. I have plans for a fruit press which would work for olives. I have the screws to build two presses. One for olives cause they are oily and one for juices like apple, grape and such.

  4. I certainly could build something - what are the parameters? How much raw material will you need to press at a time? How fine will the material be - are you pressing whole sunflowers or do you have to make it into a paste first? Inquiring minds want to know!

  5. Ok. A minor correction. The olive trees that grow in our area are not true olive trees. They're just called olive trees. You can grow a small olive tree but you'd have to keep it in a large pot and bring it indoors in the cold weather. They start dying at 20°F.
The plans for the sunflower press are at the end of the link Sharon posted.

  6. Oil Press
You can get automated oil press machines, that both cleans the seeds, preheats them, and much more.
So you dont have to build it yourself:)
I can recommend this manufacturer http://www.bt-oil-press.com
